Fernhill School

Sport

Sports are an integral part of life in Fernhill School. Physical Education is delivered by specialist Physical Education staff.

Teaching sports and active lifestyles in an enthusiastic and stimulating manner improves the health and wellbeing of all of our pupils and will encourage them to maintain healthy habits into adulthood.

Our sports programme contains a variety of activities including hockey, rugby, gymnastics, dance, netball, athletics, football, tennis, swimming and much more. Pupils can participate in inter-house and inter-school sports fixtures as well as local and national competitions.

What makes PE & Sport at Fernhill School Unique?

Small class sizes allow pupils to receive more 1:1 provision. This has produced outstanding results at N5 and Higher year on year.

The certificated PE courses make use of our partnership clubs to ensure that pupils have access to world class facilities.

Sport Academies

Our extra-curricular academies feed directly into clubs in the community which has helped us to develop elite performers across a range of sporting disciplines.

Our Curriculum

S1 – S2

Pupils in S1-S2 experience a broad range of activities. Lessons are focussed on developing the Significant Aspects of Learning for PE which can be seen in the image below.

National 5 PE

The N5 PE course is split 50:50 between practical and theory. Pupils select their own activities to be assessed in and the course is tailored year on year to the interests of the pupils. The theory side of the course is focussed on pupils understanding of how Physical, Mental, Emotional and Social factors impact on performance.

Higher PE

The Higher PE course analyses the four factors in more depth with pupils asked to analyse and evaluate. Much like the N5 course, the assessment is split 50:50 between practical and theory with pupils selecting two activities of their choice to be assessed in.
